Where's Your Focus?

Something that ends up as a HUGE limiting factor in a church's ability to grow is a misguided focus about people. Many, if not most, church leaders are more focused on keeping people than reaching people. They are consumed with the preferences, the comfort and happiness of the already convinced...church people!

The sad reality is.....this is the opposite of the nature of Jesus. He was consumed with the importance of reaching people far from Him! Jesus was far more concerned with the possibility of reaching people, and multiplying...than keeping church people happy! Jesus even called the person not willing to multiply and reach people lazy and sinful! Jesus talked about this a few times during His ministry. (Take a few minutes to read Matthew 25:14-30 and Luke 15:1-7)

I have two favorite phrases in these two passages:
  1. "there's more joy in heaven over one sinner's rescued life than over ninety-nine good people in no need of rescue."

  2. "That's a terrible way to live! It's criminal to live cautiously like that! If you knew I was after the best, why did you do less than the least?"
It is crucial that our primary focus be about seeking the lost and multiplying. It is even more crucial in the life of a church that the leaders are unified in this objective. If there is a division in this area, a church is destined to plateau and eventually fail.
