Stop Defending God

I was reading the following passage this morning and God spoke something powerful to me. Take a second and read this, and I will explain.

"God told Moses, "Look at me. I'll make you as a god to Pharaoh and your brother Aaron will be your prophet. You are to speak everything I command you, and your brother Aaron will tell it to Pharaoh. Then he will release the Israelites from his land. At the same time I am going to put Pharaoh's back up and follow it up by filling Egypt with signs and wonders. Pharaoh is not going to listen to you, but I will have my way against Egypt and bring out my soldiers, my people the Israelites, from Egypt by mighty acts of judgment. The Egyptians will realize that I am God when I step in and take the Israelites out of their country." Exodus 7:1-5 Message

As a pastor it is my calling, my passion and my job to speak the very things that I believe that God has laid on my heart. Nothing gets me more fired up than being able to share the truth and the reality that God reveals to me. As a matter of fact, when I feel as though God has been speaking, I feel like I am going to explode until I share it. I don't know if you have ever felt that way, but it is amazing. But, there is often a very frustrating road block in that journey.....

People often don't listen, don't agree and don't apply those truths. In fact, there are times when people challenge it. It truthfully leaves me shocked, disappointed and even confused about what God has called me to do. After all, why would anyone ignore, argue against or reject God's message? It's God....Don't they know what they are up against? Don't they know there is nothing greater? Don't they know that God holds their very life in His hands? And, don't they understand God is the key to them reaching their live's full potential? I get frustrated.

As a result I often go into a defense mode. I often find myself working overtime to defend God's words. I find myself wanting to protect God, protect His words and protect His reputation. It is exhausting....and truly IMPOSSIBLE!

A while back I had the honor of spending some quality time with Dr. Edward Dobson. Ed is an amazing man, great husband, father, pastor and an incredible leader. Ed built his ministry on reaching the people the church often rejected, overlooked and condemned. He was reaching the atheist, the agnostics, the addicts, the HIV/Aids patients and more. His audience often had no high regard for God's words. In recent years Ed was diagnosed with ALS, a disease that will eventually take his life. Myself along with many others have asked him the question...Why do you think God allowed this in your life? His response, one that sustained him in reaching folks so far away from God, and one that sustains him today is this, "It's not my job to defend God, He can do that for himself!" POWERFUL....

This relieves an immeasurable weight from the shoulders of men and women who are called to share God's Word and truth. It is NOT our job to defend God! We are simply to be obedient and speak what God shares with us. That's all He asked Moses and Aaron to do. All through the first few chapters of Exodus, Moses was working on building his defense of God, and God simply kept asking him to speak, not defend. That's why the portion of Exodus 7 is so powerful to me. God acknowledges that the Pharaoh won't listen, but God says He will have His way against Egypt. God tells Moses in essence, "You speak like I'm telling you, and I defend my words myself."

As pastors, leaders, influencers, missionaries, parents, spouses and more....When God calls you to speak His truth, do just that. Speak boldly and with confidence. But, don't be deceived to think it's your job and don't waste your energy on defending God. He is big enough to defend Himself.
