Together for Adoption & You

If you've been around me or my blog for any length of time you know my heart for the poor, the desolate and abandoned. After nearly a decade of serving and learning in Haiti, my heart continues to grow. The burden God has placed on me to care for those in need is immeasurable. One thing I have learned is that I know very little. There is a great need and a great opportunity for ALL of us to make a huge impact on the world.

I am forever reminded of James 1:27, "Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world." It is a major call in my life....To care for the widows and the orphans. For me, I even had it tattoo'd on my body as a constant reminder! My family has adopted from Ethiopia and is currently adopting fro Haiti. While that may seem like a great thing to many, it is a small accomplishment when there is so much still to be done. The world has over 150 million orphans. Beyond those orphans, there are countless millions of people in GREAT need of the simplest needs such as water, medicine and food. The question that constantly haunts me is, "What are we going to do for the 149,999,998 others I can't adopt?"

While that number seems staggering and even maddening you and I can make an impact! In October this year I want to invite you to the Together for Adoption Conference in Phoenix, AZ. It is going to be a time of exploring how, when, where and why you and I need to deeply invest and become active in living out James 1:27 in our daily lives. It's not just about adoption, but about caring for all of the world's needy and forgotten.

As written in Reclaiming Adoption: Missional Living Through the Rediscovery of Abba Father, “To live missionally means to live each waking moment in light of the gospel so that it increasingly affects every part of our lives for the glory of God’s grace in our fallen world” (p 17). James 1:27 tells us that the practice of true religion necessarily involves caring for orphans in their distress. Therefore, to live missionally means that the Gospel is increasingly moving and empowering us to care for those who live on the razor-sharp edge of our world’s brokenness. Whether we are conscious of it or not, the Gospel is at the center of missional living and the evangelical orphan care movement.
