Hard to Swallow

There are verses in the Bible that are very hard to swallow. These verses make us struggle with who God is and what God says. I think one of the greatest reasons is that we have worked very hard to make God look and feel like us. We have taken the phrase in Genesis, about being made in God's image, to mean that He looks like us. After all, if God looks and feels likes us, then we don't have to work on changing our lives very much.

One type of verse that is hard for me to swallow is a verse that tells us God knows there is trouble or a need and doesn't immediately fix it. We think that God would want everything to be fair, fixed and perfect. So, often we disregard or just ignore those types of verses. Another type of verse that is hard for me to swallow is a verse that asks us to meet someone's need(s). We expect God to be 100% sufficient and meet everyone's needs Himself. We often forget that God has chosen us, commanded us, and expects us to be part of meeting those needs. Here is a verse I have always struggled with....

There are always going to be poor and needy people among you. So I command you: Always be generous, open purse and hands, give to your neighbors in trouble, your poor and hurting neighbors. Deuteronomy 15:11 MSG

Do you get this....God acknowledges that there will ALWAYS be poor and needy people. God said, with his own words, that He is not going to keep people from being poor and needy. It makes me ask a huge WHY???? But, the answer is clear. He allows that so that we have the chance to be obedient and do what He has asked. We are to help meet those needs and care for others by being generous and serving them.

It's tough to know that God allows poverty. It's tough to think that a loving God wouldn't make sure life was fair for all people. But, it's even more tough to be obedient and follow though on what God asks us to do!

What's a hard verse for you to swallow?
