How many times have you heard someone say "Trust Your Heart"? How many times have you said it?
That used to be one of my mottos in life. It used to be something that I thought was a profound truth in life. But then something happened....I trusted my heart and I ended up with a mess. I have trusted my heart and found myself in the greatest troubles and struggles of my entire life! But, I could not understand why!
A few years back I got my answer. I was reading through the Bible (something I do often!) and came accross a verse that explained it all. This verse helped me understand why trusting my heart ended up badly.
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? Jeremiah 17:9
God's Word says that our heart will lie to us. Our heart is a messed up, and confusing thing. I think Eugene Peterson says it best in The Message, "The heart is hopelessly dark and deceitful, a puzzle that no one can figure out." So why on earth would we follow our heart???? I think we do it simply because it feels good and we feel as thought we are in control. Both of which are illusions that end up getting us all into trouble.
So the next time you say, or hear someone say, "Trust Your Heart".....Think again!
